Good afternoon,
I was referred to you by a correction librarian. I am currently a prison librarian at Oak Park Heights Correctional Facility. At our facility library, we have about 1300 books that serve 450 offenders (non-fiction and fiction). There has had been very little efforts of adding new materials into our collection since the last librarian was here (4 years ago). As a prison librarian, I have learned that books are the most important entity that prisoners value. In addition, I strongly believe that education is a significant tool that can have a dramatic impact in a prisoner’s life. I also believe that libraries are vital to the rehabilitation of the prisoners, helping them by strengthening their character and lessening the rate of recidivism.
Being said, I am wondering if the St. Kate’s Chapter of the Progressive Librarians Guild has any interests in collecting and donating books to correction library like the one I am working at. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. Thank you for your time.

- I sent a reply to Bao, and received a response. A list of items not allowed was included. Bao (he) suggested an actual visit to the prison.
I let him? know that we wouldn't be able to take it on as a project until next year, Fall or Spring.
